But that&#8217;s usually the case with gut reactions.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a handy word for creative insults. I wish I felt like insulting somebody right now, but I haven&#8217;t had enough coffee yet. <\/p>\n<p>It sure would have come in handy yesterday when I was stuck in a clusterfuck of L.A. traffic, though. &#8220;Move your overpowered shite pile, you odious pustule!&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>It comes from Middle English by way of a Latin word for hatred, and previously from a Greek word for anger. So sayeth Webster&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Odious came into English in the 1300s, but odium didn&#8217;t arrive for another three centuries.
